        Sponsored By:                   V.A.S.  LTD.

First Competition will commence with the Spring Shows, immediately following the 2008 Royal Melbourne Show and conclude at the 2009 Royal Melbourne Show. Competitor can only win at one Show in any one year. Entrant must reside within the boundaries of the Group in which she/he is Competing. Group judging takes place at the 2009 Annual SW VAS Ltd Group Final. The trophy to be won outright. The compulsory recipe required by the A.D.F.A. to be used in this comp competition.

SUNBEAM RICH FRUIT CAKE

 250g (8oz) Sultanas

¼ Teaspoon grated nutmeg

250g (8oz) chopped raisins

½ teaspoon ground ginger

250g (8oz) currants

½ teaspoon ground cloves

125g (4oz) chopped mixed peel

250g (8oz) butter

250g (8oz) soft brown sugar

½ teaspoon almond essence

90g (3oz) chopped red glace cherries

½ teaspoon vanilla essence

90g (3oz) chopped blanched almonds

1/3 cup sherry or brandy

4 large eggs

250g (8oz) plain flour

60g (2oz) self raising flour

½ teaspoon lemon essence or finely grated lemon rind

Here’s what to do: Mix together all the fruits and nuts and sprinkle with the sherry or brandy. Cover and leave for at least 1 hour, but preferably overnight.  Sift together the flours and spices.  Cream together the butter and sugar with the essences.  Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, and then alternately add the fruit and flour mixtures.  Mix thoroughly.  The mixture should be stiff enough to support a wooden spoon.  Place the mixture into a prepared tin no larger than 20cm (8”) and bake in a slow oven for approximately 31/2 - 4 hours.  Allow the cake to cool in the tin.

Note:  To ensure uniformity and depending upon the size it is suggested the raisins be snipped into 2 or 3 pieces, cherries into 4-6 pieces and almonds crosswise into 3-4 pieces.

An exhibitor having won at a show, will bake another cake for entry in the Group Final, the winner will then be required to bake a further cake for the State Final at the next Royal Melbourne Show.

THE THUNDERBOX FROM HELL

In days of old, backsides got cold, whilst sitting on the dunny.

We can laugh about it now, but way back in them days it wasn’t all that funny.

We sat there in the summer and the northerlies would blow.

We sat there in the winter; through rain and snow.

And sometime as we sat there the can would overflow.

This truly happened a long; long time ago.

Down behind the holly bush, underneath a tree, there stood our old thunderbox, our bush lavatory.

Underneath the seat there was a rusty tin, and when you sat upon the seat, you shut the blowflies in.

All around the countryside, dunnies like this you’d find.

And blowies flyin’ round beneath you would tickle your behind.

The blowies flyin’ round plus the awful smell

I suppose you could have called this place, the thunderbox from hell.

(exert from Patty O’Connor’s Poem)
